Texas Border Business
As one of the most prominent and economically relevant border cities in the United States, Laredo is a leader in trade, business and commerce. Its strong binational ties have prompted an influx of people from different countries, increasing the need for English as a Second Language (ESL) courses.
Hence, the Laredo College English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is offered through the Adult Education and Literacy Department to assist non-native English speakers and internationally-trained professionals in becoming literate in the English language and obtaining the necessary knowledge and skills for employment and self-sufficiency in the United States.
The scope of the program is primarily designed to teach students how to understand, speak, read and write the English language. In addition, each ESL class has a civics component to help students better understand American citizenship.
The program may also place eligible students on a pathway to complete their high school equivalency, earn a workforce credential or enroll in post-secondary education. It provides the training English language learners need to achieve their educational goals and realize their dreams at no cost.
To be eligible, students must reside in Webb, Jim Hogg, or Zapata counties and have a government-issued photo ID and prove their residency. These classes are open to all adults 18 years and older, but persons younger than 18 must meet strict requirements. Individuals who have a high school diploma or GED can participate in the ESL Program but must demonstrate a deficiency in their English language skills through a required evaluation.
“English language proficiency is a requirement for virtually every job in our region and across the nation, and therefore is an essential skill that job-seekers must master,” Laredo College Dean of Community Education Sandra Cortez said. “Through our partnership with the Texas Workforce Commission, our Adult Education and Literacy Department has been able to offer ESL courses and other valuable workforce training and preparation for non-English speakers to seek employment opportunities.”
In order to assist individuals in becoming literate and in obtaining the necessary skills for employment, the ESL Program prepares adults to be fully involved in their children’s education as they gain knowledge for future employment.
Registration for the courses is underway, and there is limited space available. Students will need to complete a placement test and orientation upon registration. Both morning and evening classes are available.
