Mia Plata is fully immersed in her journey at South Texas College, balancing her studies with three part-time jobs.

Originally from McAllen, Plata began her studies in the Medical Assistant program to follow her family’s wishes, but she quickly realized a career in health care wasn’t for her.

“At first, I didn’t know what I wanted to do, so I went with what my parents wanted – something in the medical field,” Plata said. “But then I thought, ‘I needed to do my thing,’ so I switched to business, because it offers more opportunities for me.”

Now in her second year, Plata is exploring the world of business, with a specific interest in marketing.

“I’m really drawn to the promotional side of marketing. It’s a lot of numbers, but I know if I put my mind to it, I can do it,” she said.

In addition to her studies, Plata works three jobs. She works at her church, where she works with children, she babysits and holds a part-time role at a retail store in the mall.

“I like to stay busy because if I don’t do anything throughout the day, I feel like I haven’t accomplished anything,” Plata said. “Working with kids is especially rewarding. They’re so honest and I love watching them grow.”

Although business is her focus, Plata sees teaching or working with children as a backup if she decides to shift directions in the future.

“I enjoy spending time with kids, and I’m not bad with them. It’s a path I could consider,” she added.

Plata credits STC’s supportive community and faculty for helping her stay motivated and focused.

“Everyone here is so sweet, and the faculty really goes out of their way to help you,” she said. “In big universities, you don’t always get that personal attention, but here, they check in on you and make sure you’re doing okay.”

As she continues her studies, Plata is excited to explore all the possibilities her business degree might offer. Whether in marketing, management or youth mentorship, she’s ready to make her mark.
