EDINBURG, Texas – Hidalgo County Precinct 4 Commissioner Ellie Torres hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the Memorial (Sunflower) Park on Monday, Feb. 14 in Edinburg. The event was received with much excitement and enthusiasm from the residents and all others present. Representatives from the offices of Congressman Vicente Gonzalez, State Representative Terry Canales and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department were in attendance.
Commissioner Ellie Torres plans to expand the existing park amenities at the Memorial (Sunflower) Park to include an inclusive playground, splash pad, exercise station, baseball field, basketball court, soccer field, picnic facilities, pavilion and site furnishings, shade structures, lighted walking trail, a parking lot, and native plants. The park is to be completed by early to mid-fall 2022.
The park expansion is being built at $2.4M with a match grant of $1,223,357 Urban Outdoor Grant Match from the Water and Land Conservation Fund with funding assistance through the United States Department of Interior, National Park Service administered by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
“I am grateful for the support from so many to include the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as this grant match allows Hidalgo County Precinct 4 to expand and complete the park to improve the quality of life for many generations to come,” said Commissioner Torres.
The expansion project is under the project management of B2Z Engineering and under construction by G & G Construction.
