DALLAS, Texas — The American Federation for Children (AFC) today celebrated the Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) program receiving more than 274,000 applications during its initial rollout period. This extraordinary milestone demonstrates strong demand for school choice with the largest launch in school choice history.  

According to the Texas Comptroller’s Office, which oversees the program, the application total surpassed 274,000 ahead of the final deadline. Clearly, Texas families are eager to access the expanded educational options TEFA delivers. 

AFC congratulates Governor Greg Abbott, Lieutenant Gov. Dan Patrick, Speaker Dustin Burrows, and the Texas legislature for their strong leadership that made the TEFA program a reality. AFC also congratulates Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock and administration partner Odyssey for creating a smooth, efficient, accessible application process.

The Texas Education Freedom Account program represents one of the most significant expansions of school choice in the nation, providing families from all backgrounds with greater flexibility to select the educational setting that best fits their child’s needs.
