Edinburg, Texas– The City of Edinburg is extending an invitation to the community for the 31st annual Juneteenth Celebration, an event celebrating the rich Black heritage of the Rio Grande Valley, set to take place on Saturday, June 15, 2024. This year’s celebration explores critical aspects of history and culture through motivational speakers, soul-stirring musical performances, and engaging family fun that will foster community unity throughout the night.
Juneteenth, recognized as a national holiday, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, it wasn’t until June 19, 1865, that the news of freedom was brought to the enslaved people in Galveston, Texas.
The Commemorative Ceremony is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. at the Edinburg Municipal Auditorium (EMA), located at 200 N. 7th Ave, directly behind Edinburg City Hall. This ceremony will highlight the pivotal themes of Juneteenth, offer insights into the Black history of the RGV, and spotlight Edinburg’s Black historical sites and notable individuals from the Black community.
The celebration will transition to the Food Truck Park at 201 N. 7th Ave after the ceremony. Beginning at 7 p.m., attendees can enjoy an evening filled with family-friendly activities, carnival rides, stilt walkers, Soul music, $5 all-you-can-ride carnival rides, food vendors, and an engaging Juneteenth block party. A highlight of the festival is the visit from the All-America City of La Marque, Texas, and their marching band to bring unique rhythms to the Edinburg festival grounds.
This event is made possible through the collaborative efforts of the City of Edinburg, the Library & Cultural Arts Department, and the Juneteenth Jubilee Committee.
