As a designated Music Friendly Community, Edinburg is committed to preserving and promoting diverse musical traditions while providing emerging artists with opportunities to showcase their talents. The Big Squeeze serves as both a competition and a cultural celebration, spotlighting the next generation of accordionists and the vibrant sounds of conjunto, zydeco, Cajun, and polka music.
Applications for the competition are open through February 15, 2025. Young accordion players interested in participating can submit their applications online.
Semi-Finals: April 25 – 26 – Edinburg
Finals: May 17-18 – Texas Folklife Weekend at the Bullock Museum in Austin
The newly crowned Big Squeeze Youth Ambassador will have the opportunity to perform at the Accordion Kings & Queens showcase, engage with audiences, create content for Texas Folklife’s social media platforms, and participate in cultural events throughout 2025-2026.
For nearly two decades, Texas Folklife has provided a platform for young musicians to develop their skills, learn from industry professionals, and keep Texas’ accordion traditions alive.
“The City of Edinburg’s Cultural Arts Division is dedicated to fostering a thriving arts community, honoring our musical heritage, and supporting local talent,” Assistant Cultural Arts Director Magdiel Castle said. “Hosting the Big Squeeze aligns with our mission to establish Edinburg as a cultural hub while creating meaningful experiences for our residents.”
