EDINBURG – The Edinburg Rotary Club recently recognized the top students from the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District’s UIL Academics Program.
“We are extremely proud of all our students that participate in our UIL Academics Program,” said ECISD UIL Academics Director Nelinda Villarreal. “We would like to thank the Edinburg Rotary for recognizing and acknowledging the hard work of these students.”
The students’ recognition is part of the Edinburg Rotary’s Student of the Month Program, which is held during the community service organization’s luncheon meeting at the Echo Hotel.
The honored students talked about their experiences, accomplishments and future.
“It’s always exciting when we get the students to come join us at our monthly Student of the Month Program,” said Edinburg Rotary Club Board Member Diane McLarty. “They’re impressive students. They’ve told us how much they love getting up on Saturday mornings, participating in UIL. They really are a bright group of kids.”
According to Villarreal, the UIL Program consists of 300 coaches and more than 6,000 students, who compete in 25 high school events.
“At the middle school level, we offer 20 events. And at the elementary school level, we have 14 events,” Villarreal said. “Students from second grade through 12th grade can select any event that they want to explore more in depth.”
The Edinburg Rotary recognized the following students:
- Edinburg High School senior Yesenia Mora
- Edinburg High School senior Juan C. Rodriguez
- Edinburg North High School senior Melina Garcia
- Edinburg North High School senior Frando Escamilla
- Economedes High School senior Ximena Garcia
- Economedes High School senior Omar Lopez
- Vela High School senior Clarissa Enriquez

Additionally, the Edinburg Rotary Club is sponsoring a $1,000 scholarship for two graduating seniors at each of the area high schools.
“Our Rotary Club will email the high school counselors and the Financial Aid Department with our scholarship application and it will have the deadline information,” McLarty said. “We will award those scholarships sometime in April and we encourage all of the graduating seniors to apply.”
