EDINBURG – The Edinburg Rotary Club recently honored the top student-athletes from the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District.
“It’s a great opportunity for the community to acknowledge what we are doing with our student-athletes,” said ECISD Athletics Director Rogelio Garza. “They are students first, but we give them the opportunity to compete in another arena by being involved in athletics.”
The students’ recognition is part of the Edinburg Rotary’s Student of the Month Program, which is held during the community service organization’s luncheon meeting at the Echo Hotel.
“These are kids who have excelled in the classroom, that have also excelled on the field and on the court,” said ECISD Physical Education Coordinator Leo Reyes. “It’s a tremendous opportunity for the Rotary Club to be able to recognize our student athletes that represent our various sports from our four high schools.”
During the presentation, Rotarians heard from the students, who spoke about their experiences, accomplishments and future plans. They also learned about the more than a dozen different sports offered at Edinburg CISD for boys and girls.
“We try to lay the foundation at the elementary level,” Reyes said. “We just received funds to have golf equipment at all our elementary schools. We started our sports camps for our kids in the second through fifth grade, ultimately, leading up to them being athletes in middle and high school.”
The Edinburg Rotary recognized the following students:
- Edinburg High School senior Sicilia Lopez
- Edinburg High School senior Adrian Garza
- Edinburg North High School senior Isabella Garcia
- Edinburg North High School senior Alejandro Salinas Jr.
- Economedes High School senior Dayan Lozano
- Economedes High School senior Lee Roy Montano
- Vela High School senior Glendys Maldonado
- Vela High School senior Justin Cantu
“We would like to thank the Rotary for acknowledging our student athletes and what they have done for our school district,” Garza said. “We hope these students come back and become part of the community, just like the Rotarians.”
