EDINBURG – The Edinburg Rotary Club recently announced during its virtual luncheon meeting that it is donating $4,500 to support three charities involving children’s projects. The Rotary’s Service Over Self Foundation is funding all three of the programs.
Edinburg Rotary is donating $1,000 to fund the ECISD Back to School Backpack program, which will provide backpacks filled with school supplies for over 100 at-risk students at Harwell Middle School with the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District.
“I am thrilled that the Edinburg Rotary Club continues to support this project,” said Rotarian Frances Dicus, the organizer of the ECISD Back to School Backpack program. “It is imperative that we try to meet the needs of our children in the community.”
The Club is also contributing $2,000 to the CASA for Kids program, which will benefit children through CASA of Hidalgo County. This non-profit organization helps children in the foster care system.
“CASA of Hidalgo will receive a grant to add a Reflection Garden,” said Rotarian Elias Longoria, the director of the CASA for KIDS program. “This outdoor garden will be an open area, allowing CASA children to feel safe while expressing their feelings openly.”
The final project the Edinburg Rotary is funding will be $1,500 for the Operation Christmas Child/Shoe Box program, which will deliver 96-gift filled shoeboxes for needy children from dozens of countries from around the world.
“What a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season by packing a shoebox full of toys, school supplies, and clothes,” said Rotarian Trecia Munal, coordinator of the Operation Christmas Child/Shoe Box program. “Each box will be sent out before the Christmas holiday to a special boy or girl. They will travel all around the world to areas of need.”
The Edinburg Rotary Club is comprised of 50 business and community members.
