Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg RGV Club members have been learning how bullying hurts others. The different types of bullying include verbal, social, physical and cyberbullying. The 7th week of summer camp was devoted to anti-bullying activities.

According to the 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 19 percent of students have been bullied on school property nationwide, 17.2 percent have seriously considered attempting suicide, and 6.7 percent of students did not go to school because they felt unsafe.

The week of activities culminated in a presentation by Edinburg Police Department.  Officer Lara talked about the harmful effects of bullying, encouraged club members to treat others with respect as equals, and about consequences of one’s actions. Club members learned that everyone is hurt when someone is bullied.

“We do a lot of anti-bullying programs and awareness at the Club, but it’s so nice when club members can hear first-hand from their local role models about how they overcame bullying challenges they faced in their youth. This weeks’ activities were part of Boys & Girls Clubs Be A STAR program. The Clubs’ Be A STAR program, focuses on social and emotional learning, and gives Club members the tools they need to enhance their learning, decision making, creativity, relationships, and mental health,” said Adriana Rendon, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg RGV.
