EDINBURG, TEXAS – Edinburg is a hometown of heroes and we have proudly named our city streets and buildings in honor of these heroes who loved their city, served their country and paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Today, the City of Edinburg named the city’s police training facility after LCPL Derek Hernandez.
LCPL Derek Hernandez was born in Edinburg and lived here all of his life. Those who knew him will tell you his smile could light up a room. He loved his friends, his family and his hometown of Edinburg.
LCPL Hernandez joined the United States Marine Corps in 2008 worked as a military police officer while stationed at Camp Pendleton, California.
He served as an infantryman when he was deployed on his first tour of duty.
It was June 6, 2010, while supporting combat operations of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, that LCPL Hernandez was killed in a convoy. He was 20 years old.
He always wanted to be a Marine and after the Marines, Derek Hernandez wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement. Today, we were honored to have LCPL Hernandez’s family with us as we officially named Edinburg’s Police Training Facility the LCPL Derek Hernandez Police Training Facility.“LCPL Hernandez sacrificed his life for our country.” Said Mayor Richard Molina. “We hope every future police officer in Edinburg who trains at this facility will see Derek’s name on the building and know his sacrifice. This is our City’s way of memorializing LCPL Hernandez, his name and the love he had for his hometown.”
