EDINBURG, Texas – Edinburg Cultural Arts is proud to present Ballet Nepantla’s groundbreaking performance of Nacimiento at the Edinburg Arts, Culture, and Events (ACE) Center on January 3-4, 2025. This full-length ballet explores the birth of the mestizaje through the lens of Christianity’s emergence and Christmas traditions in the New World.
Audiences will experience an unforgettable blend of pre-Hispanic rituals and the impact of colonization, told through the innovative fusion of contemporary and classical ballet with Mexican folklórico. Founded in 2016 by South Texas and Edinburg native Andrea Guajardo and Martin Rodríguez, Ballet Nepantla has redefined the boundaries of professional concert dance by blending cultural traditions with modern artistry.
Nacimiento brings to life pivotal figures such as La Malinche, Juan Diego, and La Virgen de Guadalupe, weaving their stories into the festive traditions of Mexican Christmas celebrations. The ballet honors the contributions of Mayan, Aztec, and other Indigenous women alongside traditional characters such as Cortés and Juan Diego. The production concludes with vibrant posadas and celebratory dances, evoking the joy and resilience of the holiday season.
The Texas Observer describes Ballet Nepantla’s artistry as “contemporary dancers who weave in and out of the folklórico dancers in an ethereal braid entwining new and old, seduction and pursuit, and life and death.” Audiences can expect a powerful and visually stunning performance that celebrates the complexity of cultural identity.
