EDINBURG, Texas — Fourteen streets will be improved throughout the City. This after the Edinburg City Council awarded two bids to a local contractor at the November 17, 2015 regularly scheduled meeting.
The work is scheduled to begin in December and all 14-streets should be completed by March 2016 weather permitting. The scope of the work includes: milling; 1 ½ inch overlays; striping; and roadside ditch cleaning and reshaping in rural areas.
The Edinburg Public Works Department conducted a City wide review of streets and deemed several are in need of attention due to regular wear and tear and in some cases, damage caused by the recent rain events. The designated streets are:

Total cost for this capital improvement project is $2,742,133.90 which has been made available through the City’s 2015-2016 Bond Issuance.
The Council is expected to consider a third bid for $1.3 million at the December 1, 2015 regularly scheduled meeting that would add another eight streets to the list. Those streets are:
Gwin Road from Monte Cristo to North City Limits
Doolittle Road from De La Rosa to North City Limits

Jasman Road from Chapin to Monte Cristo
Mile 17 ½ Road from I69C to Doolittle

The total cost for the additional streets is $1,311,224.80 and would also be funded through the City’s 2015-2016 Bond Issuance.
Meanwhile, The Public Works Department also identified several neighborhoods in need of street repairs– Encinos Escondidos; Kenyon Estates; Sugar Hill Estates, and South Ridge Subdivision. The streets in these communities will be revamped in the way of overlays via the City’s Neighborhood Improvement Project.
The Edinburg City Council set aside $350,000 for the Neighborhood Improvement Project through the City’s 2015-2016 Fiscal Year Budget. More neighborhoods will be included if money is left over.
Alleys throughout the City’s commercial area will also be analyzed for repairs. The Public Works Department has $200,000 budgeted for overlays where needed. Some alleys may need to be completely re-done while others may need only minor repairs. This work will be done in-house and crews will start with those most in need.
Edinburg City Councilmember David Torres says this work is very much needed to help improve getting in and around Edinburg. “We want to make sure that when people travel on our roadways they have a pleasant experience. We don’t want them to forego on visiting Edinburg because our streets are in bad shape. We have a lot to offer and with the new venues currently under construction we want our streets to be in top shape when they open.”
Work on all three projects is expected to get underway in December. Some road closures and delays could develop. Should that happen the community will be notified via the City’s Notification System, website, and social media outlets.
