EDINBURG – The Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District hosted a swearing-in ceremony for three members elected to the Board of Trustees during a Special Called Board Meeting on Nov. 17 in the District’s board room.

Family members and guests watched as the first trustee, incumbent Carmen Gonzalez, was sworn into office. This will be her fifth term on the Board.

“My personal goal is to continue doing what I have done in the past 14 years. One is to listen to people, talk to people, and recognize their needs, and that influences my decision,” Gonzalez said. “This year, the major goal is that somehow, someway, we are able to bring together the need of the students with their teachers.”

Newly-elected board member Luis G. Alamia was the next trustee to take the oath of office.

“I am very excited to be working with the rest of the Board, making sure that ECISD continues to be the place to be for all of our students and staff. And making sure that we always keep everybody else, like our community, first in priority in every decision that we make here as a Board, because every decision that we make will reflect highly on us,” Alamia said.

“As a newly-elected Board Member, I will continue to maintain the safety and security of our students and of course our staff, while maintaining a high-level quality of education,” he said. “That’s going to be my main priority, coming from a healthcare background. I think I bring that expertise to our Board.”

The third and final trustee sworn into office was incumbent Miguel “Mike” Farias. This is his second term on the Board.

“During the first four years, there was a lot of learning. But, I learned that we have a wonderful staff. I have such a great appreciation for everyone that works here,” Farias said. “You have to have a calling to want to go ahead and work with children. We are working with individuals who aren’t simply collecting checks but have a calling to do what they do, investing in our future. I look forward to working with them. We do have some challenges, but we have the correct staff to take care of those challenges.”

Edinburg CISD Interim Superintendent Gilbert Garza thanked outgoing trustee Robert Pena Jr. for his 12 years of service on the Board and presented him with a plaque during the event.
