EDINBURG – Financial aid officers from the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District are encouraging high school seniors to fill out their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form early this year.
“FAFSA opened up on October 1, 2020, so we want to make sure that students submit their financial aid application to see what type of financial assistance they can qualify to receive,” Edinburg High School Financial Aid Officer Jeanette Tamez said. “The priority deadline does vary for some universities, but the federal priority deadline is January 15, 2021.”
The FAFSA form is a significant gateway for federal grants, student loans, work-study programs, and scholarships.
Edinburg CISD had a total of 2,625 graduates in 2020. Many of those students earned scholarships, which totaled more than $20 million for the class of 2020.
The U.S. Department of Education released the 2021-2022 FAFSA form at the start of the month, asking students and parents to complete the form via fafsa.gov on a computer or mobile device.
Tamez said that some of the documents that students need to include in the FAFSA form are their parents’ 2019 tax information.
The Edinburg High School Financial Aid Department has developed a step-by-step guide for students completing their FAFSA form.
“We also want to remind students to submit their scholarship applications,” Tamez said.
High school seniors are encouraged to visit the website of their campus’ Financial Aid Department for more information on FAFSA and to review a list of scholarships that are updated frequently.
