EDINBURG – The Texas Association of Secondary Principals (TASSP) recently announced that Roberta Davila, an assistant principal at Longoria Middle School, is the Region One Outstanding Assistant Principal of the Year.
“I am excited and honored. I feel like I have the best job in the world,” Davila said. “And like they say, ‘Whenever you have a good job, you never work a day in your life.’ I feel the same way.”
Davila has worked for the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District for 19 years. Her first job was as a science teacher at South Middle School, where she worked for 13 years. In 2013, she joined the leadership team at Longoria Middle School as an assistant principal.
“This is great, exciting news to have one of our staff members that work so hard, dedicates a lot of her time in the mornings, after school and during her lunch as well, to be able to help students out there and our staff.” Longoria Middle School Principal Antonio Ballesteros said. “So, we are very excited that she is able to be representing Longoria Middle School and ECISD with this award.”
Davila earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (formerly the University of Texas-Pan American). She sees herself as being a risk taker, a visionary, and leader of learners. She is credited with numerous achievements, including the creation of a STEM Family Activity Night for students and their parents.
“The nice thing is I’ve been under such amazing leadership my entire career from my first year of teaching all the way up to this year with Mr. Ballesteros,” Davila said. “I come from a long line of good leaders. So, I’ve learned the best from everybody that I have worked under. And my teachers are amazing, so it makes it easy.”
According to TASSP, the organization recognizes outstanding principals and assistant principals from the 20 regional Education Service Centers throughout the state. School administrators are nominated and chosen by their peers within their regions. Nominations are based upon exemplary performance and outstanding leadership.
As the regional winner, Davila is eligible to compete for the state title of Texas Assistant Principal of the Year. Each of the regional winners will be recognized during the Josten’s Night of the Stars Awards Dinner on June 11 at the Hilton Austin Downtown Hotel.
“I’m nervous but excited. I am going to go for it. There is nothing wrong with trying,” Davila said.
