EDINBURG – Five fifth-grade students recently won the top seats at the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District’s 25th Annual District Spelling Bee held at Vela High School in Edinburg.
Ann Jacob from Trevino Elementary School was the top speller among 78 students from third grade to eighth grade who competed in several rounds of competition.
The 2018 ECISD spelling bee winners are as follows:
- First-Place Winner: Ann Jacob, Trevino Elementary School fifth grader
- Second-Place Winner: Isabel Thoppil, Trevino Elementary School fifth grader
- Third-Place Winner: Trisha Mae Alpapara, De La Vina Elementary School fifth grader
- Fourth-Place Winner: Kenia Acosta Quintanilla, Jefferson Elementary School fifth grader
- Fifth-Place Winner: Yuridia Tello, Avila Elementary School fifth grader
The five students will be advancing to the 30th Annual Rio Grande Valley Regional Spelling Bee competition in March.
The champion of the regional competition will win an all-expense paid trip to compete in the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
The Edinburg CISD Library Services Department organized the competition.
