Dynamic Duo leads UTRGV Women’s Basketball past UTSA

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – Graduate student Jordan Agustus and junior Trelynn Tyler combined for 48 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team past the UTSA Roadrunners 75-64 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

Agustus led the Vaqueros (4-3) by posting her second-straight double-double with a career-high 27 points, a career-high 13 rebounds, a career-high four assists, and a career-high-tying four blocks. Junior Trelynn Tylerscored 21 points with five rebounds and six assists.

Mikayla Woods led the Roadrunners (3-4) with 20 points. Karrington Donald scored 15 points with six rebounds. Charlene Mass finished with 10 points and four assists.

The Vaqueros hit six of their first eight shots to jump out to a 14-3 lead. The Roadrunners responded with a 10-2 run, but junior Brownsville Saint Joseph alum Valeria Tapia closed the first quarter with a three to put the Vaqueros up 19-13.

The Roadrunners got as close as one in the second quarter, including at 26-25 before Agustus and senior Megan Johnson hit layups to push the Vaqueros’ lead to 30-25.

The Vaqueros pushed their lead to 39-33 on a Tyler three early in the third, but the Roadrunners responded with a 15-4 run to take a 48-43 lead.

The Roadrunners still led by five at 51-46, but Agustus closed the third quarter with a layup and opened the fourth with two free throws and a jumper to give the Vaqueros the lead. It was all part of a 15-0 run, capped by a driving layup by junior Amara Graham, that gave the Vaqueros a 61-51 lead that they never relinquished.

UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Texas A&M International. Fans donate a useable coat to receive free general admission. All donations benefit Tim’s Coats, a non-profit organization that, in conjunction with the Southwest Dry Cleaners Association, distributes coats to families in need throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Current UTRGV students get free general admission with a valid UTRGV student ID. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online at UTRGVTickets.com. Fans purchasing their tickets online prior to game day can save up to $2 per ticket. Doors open at 1.
