April 20, 2024, marked a historic day in South Texas as the medical community and residents of the Rio Grande Valley celebrated the unveiling of Driscoll Children’s Hospital, scheduled to open on May 1, 2024. This event announced a new era for healthcare in the region, introducing the Rio Grande Valley’s first designated children’s hospital—a vital development for an area home to 1.5 million people and historically underserved medically.

Matt Wolthoff, president of Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley, could barely contain his excitement during the ceremony. “We’re excited to show the Lt. Governor Dan Patrick the Rio Grande Valley’s first designated children’s hospital, a state-of-the-art facility that will transform healthcare in the Valley for generations to come,” he stated. The hospital represents a monumental achievement in pediatric healthcare, providing unprecedented care levels and services to the region’s youngest residents.

Driscoll has invested over $100 million in the new eight-story facility in Edinburg, which will open with more than 600 employees and 119 pediatric beds. From its first day, the hospital will offer emergency care and pediatric specialty services, anticipated to generate $124.7 million annually in economic growth for Texas.

Highlighting the event was Tialy Martinez and her mother, Ileana, who shared their profound gratitude for the new facility. Tialy, who has been battling a complex condition known as Face syndrome, and her family previously had to travel long distances for treatment. The new hospital will significantly reduce their travel, providing essential care closer to home. Ileana Martinez, visibly moved, thanked the community and state officials for their support, stating, “It’s an incredible blessing.”

The ceremony also acknowledged Lt. Governor Dan Patrick and Texas Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa for their dedication and support. Tialy presented Lt. Governor Patrick with a framed drawing expressing gratitude for the community’s support, an emotional moment that highlighted the hospital’s personal impact on local families.

Teresa Rodriguez, Driscoll’s Marketing and Communications Officer and the ceremony MC, noted, “With this great hospital in the Rio Grande Valley, we will bring the families closer together when they need it most.” This sentiment encapsulates Driscoll Children’s Hospital’s core mission—to provide high-quality pediatric care and strengthen community bonds through health and healing.

Driscoll’s expansion into the Rio Grande Valley enhances its reputation as a leading healthcare provider in South Texas. Since its founding in 1953, Driscoll has become the region’s largest and fastest-growing healthcare system, with facilities including Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi and various specialty centers and clinics across South Texas. With the addition of this new hospital, Driscoll continues to build on its commitment to the health and well-being of Texas children, ensuring that the future of pediatric healthcare in South Texas is brighter than ever.
