Originally from Albuquerque and a longtime resident of San Antonio, Dr. Howard brings over 17 years of educational experience to Sharyland ISD. “This feels like coming home,” she shared, emphasizing her connection to the community despite being new to the Rio Grande Valley. With a robust background in educational leadership, including a tenure as deputy superintendent at Bernie ISD, Dr. Howard is ready to tackle the challenges of her new role.

In discussing her move to Sharyland, Dr. Howard revealed her plans to transition to the district by May after being formally appointed at the upcoming board meeting. Her focus is clear: to enhance educational facilities and ensure that students receive resources comparable to university standards.

When asked about her feelings on being the final candidate for the position, Dr. Howard expressed humility and readiness to lead: “It’s humbling and overwhelming. Superintendents come and go, and the fact that the board trusts me to lead this district is very humbling.”

She also highlighted the similarities in challenges faced by fast-growing districts like Sharyland, from funding issues to aging infrastructure, stressing the importance of adapting to ensure students’ needs are met today.

Maritza Venecia, Vice President of the Sharyland ISD Board, shared her enthusiasm for Dr. Howard’s appointment. “The interview process was amazing, and she really stood out. Her energy and intelligence are phenomenal,” Venecia noted. Having been a part of the board for three years, she brings a parent’s perspective to her role, with children across different educational needs within the district.

Venecia expressed pride in the selection process and optimism about the future: “I think her addition is like adding to a dream team. We’re excited about the new leadership style she will bring.”

The community’s response to Dr. Howard’s appointment has been overwhelmingly positive, mirroring Venecia’s sentiments. As Sharyland ISD turns a new leaf under Dr. Howard’s leadership, the focus remains on maintaining excellence and embracing the challenges ahead.

The introduction of Dr. Howard not only marks a significant leadership transition but also reinforces Sharyland ISD’s commitment to fostering an educational environment that prepares students for the complexities of the modern world. With a fresh vision and renewed energy, Dr. Howard and the Sharyland ISD are set to navigate the future of education together.
