Pharr, Texas – Pharr native and noted physician Dr. Ambrosio “Amos” Hernandez formally announces his candidacy for office of Mayor of Pharr, Texas as of today, he has officially filed his application for a place on the City of Pharr general election ballot today Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at Pharr City Hall.

Dr. Hernandez made the decision to seek public office after having been encouraged by many Pharr residents, his family, and his professional colleagues, many of whom felt that the city of Pharr could benefit from the leadership experience, business-oriented strategy, and access to opportunities that Dr. Hernandez provides.

“Over the years, I have not seen a tangible return on my investment as a taxpayer and I think it is time for a new direction that includes accountability,” Dr. Hernandez stated. “I decided to run for mayor because as a citizen, taxpayer, and businessman, I feel it is my responsibility to bring my knowledge, experience, and relationships to the table to bring more opportunities to the city of Pharr.” He said,

Dr. Hernandez graduated from Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High School in 1986, and received his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry from the University of Texas-Pan American in 1990. He earned his medical degree from The University of Michigan Medical School in 1995, with a general surgery residency specializing in pediatric surgery at The University of Texas-Medical Branch at Galveston. Dr. Hernandez returned to Pharr in 2004, and currently serves as Medical Director of Surgical Services in the Rio Grande Valley for Driscoll Children’s Hospital and is the Chief Medical Compliance Officer for Doctor’s Hospital at Renaissance (DHR).

Dr. Hernandez is active in civic participation, and has served as a board member and in leadership positions for organizations such as the Ronald McDonald House, the Border Health PAC, and the Advocacy Alliance Center of Texas (AACT). Dr. Hernandez married his high school sweetheart, Cristina, and they have a 10-year-old son, Joseph. The family resides in Pharr, the household includes Cristina’s parents, and they remain active in the community.
