PHARR – Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD (PSJA ISD) is currently hosting Gifted & Talented Chess and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Mathematics) Camps at Liberty Middle School in Pharr for students in the district’s Gifted & Talented Program from Kinder through 3rd grade.
The PSJA GT Chess & STEAM camps will continue for grades 4th-8th the week of June 21-24 from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm at Liberty Middle School.
“At PSJA ISD, we take pride in providing life-changing opportunities for our students,” said PSJA Superintendent Dr. Jorge L. Arredondo. “We thank our creative teachers and Advanced Academic Program staff for always finding unique ways to engage our students even during the summer months as they prepare for the next school year.”
For GT Program Coordinator Noemi Serna, making last year’s camp virtual due to the pandemic closure was tough as her team looks forward to this time together with the students, but students came back eager to learn in-person this summer.
“It’s great to see that students are really technology savvy,” said Serna. “Our instructors are blown away by all the knowledge and information our students, even kindergarteners, know!”
As part of the camps, students get to engage in interactive activities to spark their creativity such as Chess, robotics, and even coding.
“My two favorite things are the robotics and that we get to do fun experiments,” said Kalista Elizondo, a kinder student at Sorensen Elementary in San Juan.
The camps are part of the district’s efforts to prepare students to compete and excel in a global society. In addition to these GT Camps, students are also able to stay active and healthy through the free PSJA Sports Camps currently offered at numerous locations.
