McAllen, Texas – The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) is presenting its second annual Shark Week Celebration from July 24 –29, 2018. Inspired by the popular Shark Week programming on television, the museum will be providing engaging educational activities and presentations about sharks. The program is geared for family participation.

Participants will be able to learn about ancient aquatic creatures with hands-on art and science activities in conjunction with Science on a Sphere exhibit presentations. Educational programs will provide opportunities to explore the anatomy of a shark by building a 4D shark model. The museum will have shark fossils on view for touching, including jaws and teeth from the IMAS Teaching Collection. Visitors can make their own shark tooth impression to take home and commemorate their experience.

Claudia Martinez, Director of Education, states, “Shark Week is an opportunity to promote engaged-learning for all age levels. This event offers fun and educational ways to get children and adults interested in aquatic science. Sharks have been around for over 400 million years; there is a lot to learn about these fascinating creatures.”

The museum’s education department will also present a shark biology workshop, in which pre-enrolled registrants can dissect a spiny dogfish shark. The workshop is suitable for children ages 12 and up, and requires pre-enrollment. Shark Week Celebration is made possible this year with the support of Warner Bros. Pictures.

Shark Week Celebration will take place Tuesday, July 24 through Sunday, July 29, 2018, during the museum’s regular hours of operation. The Shark Dissection Workshop will take place on Saturday, July 28 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., and registration is $25 per participant. For more information, please call (956) 681-2800.
