McALLEN Texas The Salvation Army’s iconic Red Kettle Campaign is embracing technology to make giving easier than ever. For those who don’t carry cash, digital donation options are available at kettles across the community, ensuring everyone can join in spreading hope this holiday season.

Since its humble beginnings in 1891, when Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee placed a kettle on a San Francisco wharf to collect funds for Christmas meals, the red kettle has become a symbol of generosity. Today, the campaign helps fund vital programs year-round, including food assistance, shelter, emergency financial support, disaster relief, youth programs, and more.

“Digital giving ensures that everyone can participate in this tradition of hope. Fewer people carry cash these days and many prefer the convenience of using their smartphones to donate,” said Major Frankie Zuniga of The Salvation Army of McAllen. “If you’re out and about this Christmas season and come across a red kettle but don’t have cash, there’s no need to worry, you can scan the QR code right there at the kettle and give using Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and Venmo. The need in our community is great, and your generosity—whether through cash or a quick tap of your phone—helps The Salvation Army serve those in need throughout the year.”

In addition to giving at the kettle, donations can be made online at www.salvationarmymcallen.org. The website homepage includes three easy giving options: Donate to the Virtual Red Kettle, Volunteer to Ring the Bell, and Purchase Gifts for an Angel.

“We also need volunteers to ring the bell at our red kettles,” added Zuniga. “Every hour spent ringing helps raise essential funds that change lives. It’s a simple and fun way to make a big impact, and we invite individuals, families, and groups to sign up and be part of this tradition. Go to www.RegistertoRing.com, pick a location, date, and time that works for you, and you’re all set. It’s that easy!”

The Salvation Army is gearing up to take part in the National Commander’s Red Kettle Challenge, an annual day of fundraising across the country, issued by Commissioner Merle Heatwole, the organization’s national commander. The challenge will take place on December 13 and calls on Salvation Army Officers, volunteers, and supporters nationwide to join Commissioner Heatwole in a spirited competition to see who can raise the most donations throughout the day.

The Salvation Army will be ringing bells on December 13 at Walmart located at 2800 W Nolana in McAllen as part of the national competition and is encouraging the community to participate and contribute. All funds raised will support vital services in McAllen.
