WASHINGTON –U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) today questioned Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen in a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing about whether she would be open to including local stakeholders along the U.S.-Mexico border in the border security debate. Excerpts of Sen. Cornyn’s exchange are below, and video of the exchange can be found here.
Senator Cornyn: “Because of the impact to local communities in Texas and elsewhere along the border, do you have any objection to consulting with local stakeholders as they try to come up with perhaps innovative solutions to deal with the border security challenge?”
Secretary Nielsen: “It is an open invitation. The only way that we will be able to protect the border is by working with both state and local officials as well as those land owners and private sector, so absolutely.”
