WHY: Doctors Hospital at Renaissance (DHR) is proud to be among one of the hospitals nationwide to participate in the DAISY Award program. The DAISY Foundation created The DAISY Award to recognize nurses whose clinical skills and compassionate care exemplify the type of nurse that patients, their families, and hospital staff greatly appreciate. DHR’s inaugural DAISY ceremony will be held on Friday, August 29th at 8:30 AM in the DHR Main Lobby. We invite the community and media representatives to join us in congratulating all 16 nominees and our first DAISY Award Honoree, which will be announced during the ceremony. Cinnamon rolls and coffee will be served after the ceremony.
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died of complications of the auto-immune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP) at the age of 33. During Patrick’s eight-week hospitalization, his family took notice of the care and compassion his nurses provided, not only to Patrick but to each of the patients in his unit. Upon Patrick’s passing, his family created the DAISY Foundation, which stands for diseases attacking the immune system. The goal of the foundation was to ensure that nurses know how deserving they are of our society’s profound respect for the education, training, brainpower, and skill they put into their work, and especially for the caring with which they deliver their care.
Each month, a nurse will be selected by a committee of nurses at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance to receive The DAISY Award. At a presentation given in front of the nurse’s colleagues, physicians, patients, and visitors, the honoree will receive a certificate commending him or her for being an “Extraordinary Nurse.” The certificate reads: “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.” The honoree will also be given a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa.
