On October 5, 2024, San Antonio Detective Benjamin Garcia arrived in Mills County and reached a remarkable milestone in his ultra-endurance journey: 400 miles down, with 400 to go. His trek, which began on September 26, leads him toward McAllen, Texas, where he is expected to arrive on October 16. Garcia’s mission isn’t just a test of physical endurance—it’s a heartfelt effort to raise awareness and funds for the South Texas chapter of C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors).
As Garcia nears McAllen, where Mayor Javier Villalobos plans to join him on the final stretch of his journey, he continues to share updates on his progress and express his gratitude to the community that’s rallied behind him. “What’s going on, folks?” he said in a recent video. “I ended up hitting 400 miles today. I’m proud, but it’s not about me—it’s about C.O.P.S. and the work they do for families of fallen officers.”
C.O.P.S. is a national organization that provides critical services such as grief counseling, financial assistance, and community outreach to families and departments affected by the loss of an officer. Garcia, who has seen the impact of C.O.P.S. firsthand, is deeply committed to ensuring that this vital support continues. By running 800 miles, the longest distance of his career, he aims to raise both awareness and donations to help the organization expand its services.
Garcia’s journey began at the Amarillo Police Department, and he has been covering about 40 miles a day since then, heading south across Texas. This trek is not just a physical feat but a personal mission for Garcia, who has already surpassed his previous record of running 273 miles. Along the way, he’s been posting updates on social media, sharing his gratitude with those supporting him.
“Thank you for the encouraging words and being there for me,” Garcia said. “It lifts my spirits when I see donations coming in, and I appreciate everyone helping me out with this. We’re getting closer to McAllen, and once I hit San Antonio, we’ll be on the road home. I’m doing this to support the South Texas chapter of C.O.P.S., and I’m running with you all in mind.”
