WESLACO – Precinct 1 Commissioner David L. Fuentes, in partnership with Hidalgo County Drainage District No. 1, will host a Groundbreaking Ceremony for the 224-acre Delta Regional Reservoir, the first of three phases proposed for the Delta Region Water Management Project. The project aims to significantly alleviate flooding and improve drainage for the Delta Area region and ultimately, increase the water supply to the region. The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the project’s site location in La Villa (Uncle Peters Rd., between Mile 17 Rd. N & FM 491).
“We are working to address drainage issues throughout the county and especially in areas that are historically prone to flooding the precinct and the county and I am excited that this project is now officially breaking ground,” said Fuentes. “I look forward to the flood protection, drainage improvements, and safety that this project will provide for the constituents of Precinct 1 and many people throughout Hidalgo County.”
The Delta Regional Reservoir project is estimated to cost $48 million, with the entire Delta Region Water Management Project estimated at approximately $94 million. Future phases of the project include purchasing two additional reservoir systems and the construction of a water treatment facility at each reservoir that would allow for storm runoff water to be reclaimed and used as a new water source, providing for sustainability and also serving to mitigate flooding.
Special guests expected at the groundbreaking ceremony include federal and state legislators, county and local officials from Hidalgo, Cameron and Willacy counties, and representatives from state agencies, Texas Department of Emergency Management and the Texas Water Development Board, among other notable guests.
All media and the public are invited to attend. See attached invitation and map.
