Austin, TX – Students at Southern Careers Institute (SCI) Rio Grande Valley campuses have until this Friday, May 15 to apply for federal grant money to help with their education and other essentials such as food and housing. The school received a total of $6,305,240 from the CARES Act. Half of the funds are being distributed through need-based grants to students facing economic hardship so they can continue focusing on their education while maintaining safe social distancing protocols. SCI will use some of the remaining funds to improve online and distance learning functionality. Any money not used will be returned to the government so it can be reassigned to help other schools and students who are impacted.

“Almost 1,100 students have applied for these funds, but we’d like to see as many students apply as possible,” Jacob Mayhew, CEO of SCI. “We want to help ease the financial burden of our students and give them the freedom to focus on their education during this time, and we believe these need-based grants can help.”

SCI is committed to innovating new ways to improve teaching and learning options to ensure alignment with new social distancing guidelines. SCI will use money from the CARES Act to improve the school’s online capabilities to better facilitate distance learning and a “no-touch” environment by upgrading classroom technology to allow instructors to more easily teach virtually, purchasing laptops for students, and investing in virtual simulations to limit the number of students in practice labs while not hampering students’ training.

“We are grateful to the federal government and the CARES ACT for granting SCI these funds to help our students stay on course and focus on their education during these

unprecedented times,” said Nikki England, President of SCI. “The application deadline is fast approaching and we want to make sure that eligible students are getting the help they need.”

SCI students can apply for the CARES grant money by filling out an application by May 15.
