EDINBURG, Texas — Maricela “Mari” De León, MPA, CPM has officially filed for a place on the ballot for Hidalgo County District Clerk. A respected public servant with deep roots in Hidalgo County, De León brings more than two decades of experience in government, policy, and public service.

Born in Edinburg and raised in San Carlos, De León is no stranger to the needs of the community she hopes to serve. Her career reflects unwavering dedication, integrity, and a lifelong commitment to improving government systems for the people who rely on them.

De León began her public service journey in 2003 with the Honorable Aaron Peña, former State Representative for House District 40 and now Justice on the 13th Court of Appeals. Rising from volunteer and intern to Chief of Staff and Chief Committee Clerk, she quickly became known for her work ethic, problem-solving skills, and ability to deliver results.

Her service to Hidalgo County continued at the courthouse, where she served as Court Coordinator for the 464th District Court under the Honorable Justice Tijerina and later for the 476th District Court under the Honorable Justice Fonseca. In these roles, she gained hands-on experience with court operations, case management, and the day-to-day needs of the public, attorneys, and court staff.

De León says she is running because she knows the District Clerk’s office can—and must—provide better service. “I am running because I believe there is a better way to lead our District Clerk’s Office,” said De León. “My leadership focuses on maximizing efficiency, implementing proven systems and processes, being responsible with taxpayer dollars, and restoring the integrity and professionalism that Hidalgo County residents deserve. I am committed to serving litigants, attorneys, and self-represented individuals with fairness, transparency, and respect.”

Beyond her public service experience, León currently serves as Chief Special Adviser to State Board of Education Member LJ Francis, Board President and Interim Executive Director of RGV LEAD, and CEO of De León Professional Services. She is also a proud mother to Sebastián and member of her Catholic community. A former catechist at St. Margaret Mary Church, she now attends St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edinburg. With a strong record of management, leadership, and community service, Maricela “Mari” De León is ready to bring accountability, innovation, and compassion back to the Hidalgo County District Clerk’s Office.
