WASHINGTON, DC – In honor of Veterans Day, Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz (TX-15) introduced the Sgt. Alfredo ‘Freddy’ Gonzalez Memorial Veterans’ Hospital Act. This legislation authorizes the Secretary of Veterans Affairs (VA) to construct a Veterans hospital in the Rio Grande Valley named in honor of Texas Veteran and hero, Sgt. Alfredo ‘Freddy’ Gonzalez.
Additionally, De La Cruz sent a letter to VA Secretary Doug Collins requesting that Mobile Medical Units (MMUs) be made available to Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans’ Hospital in San Antonio to better serve Texas Veterans in rural communities.
“Our Veterans answered the call to serve and made immense sacrifices for our great nation. Though we can never repay them for their service, we can show our gratitude by ensuring every Veteran has access to affordable housing, quality health care, and the benefits they deserve. I will continue to work across the aisle on efforts that put the needs of our Veterans first.” – Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz
Background:

- Leading the bipartisan VA Home Loan Awareness Act of 2025 to ensure Veterans and their families are aware of VA benefit eligibility when applying for a home loan.
- Leading the House version of the bipartisan HUD-USDA-VA Interagency Coordination Act to ensure collaboration of government agencies to maximize housing programs for citizens and veterans.
- Co-sponsoring the Major Richard Star Act to ensure Veterans who were forced to retire early due to combat injuries receive both disability compensation and full military retirement.
