WASHINGTON, DC — Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz (TX-15) released the following statement in support of H.R. 695, the Medal of Honor Act. De La Cruz helped introduce this critical, bipartisan legislation alongside Congressman Troy Nehls (TX-22) and Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01) to implement a cost-of-living adjustment for Medal of Honor recipients’ monthly pensions.
“The Medal of Honor is awarded to the servicemen and women who have gone above and beyond in their bravery and valor. When our soldiers return home, we must ensure they can access the financial support they need. I am proud to have helped introduce this bipartisan legislation and support its passage on the House floor. Though we can never repay our servicemembers for their sacrifices, we can ensure they are able to access quality care, support, and benefits.” – Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz
Background:
The bipartisan Medal of Honor Act will increase the monthly pension for Medal of Honor Recipients to $100,000 per year. The pension was last raised by Congress in 2002. Currently, there are 61 living Medal of Honor recipients. Sergeant First Class Jose Rodela is Texas’s only living recipient. He is a native of Corpus Christi, Texas, and resides in San Antonio, Texas.
