In this issue meet David Armstrong, owner of Core Business Solutions headquartered in McAllen, has proven to be a business leader who has created a source of employment for many. He was born and raised in the Caribbean Island of Barbados to Ian and Denise Armstrong. His father instilled in him the love of hard work; that is why he emulates his father as a businessman.

“My dad was in the sugar cane industry, he worked very hard and was successful through that.” He said, “He ended his career as CEO of Barbados Sugar Farms and received the top CEO award for the entire Caribbean, that is all the islands of the Caribbean, towards the end of his career.”

It is important to note that this award is one of the most prestigious recognitions in that business due to the number of islands in the region. His dad, Ian Armstrong was indeed a true and unique businessman in his industry at the time. Read more inside…

What a surprise, McAllen Economic Development Corp. has landed a multimillion-dollar food processing plant that will generate about 300 jobs at the start. The SFT Food Tech is a Monterrey-based food processing company. They will cook, package, and distribute refrigerated meat products out of their local facility.

But that is not all, our guest writer Mike Willis, President of the South Texas Manufacturing Association writes in this issue about three more companies setting shop in McAllen.

TeleTech is opening a new Customer Care Center in McAllen that will employ up to 650 people. They will move into the former Stein Mart store building on the south side of Expressway 83 between Tenth Street and Bicentennial. They are a global contract call center operator with over 45,000 employees, providing a full spectrum of customer business solutions.

He is also announcing, Conn’s Distribution Center. This leading retailer of home furnishings and consumer electronics is moving into a 350,000 square foot facility formerly occupied by Springs Global on International Parkway south of Military Highway in McAllen.

And Colstrip is a manufacturer that cuts sheets of steel into rolled strips of various widths and thicknesses for the metal stamping sector. They are locating here to serve existing and future customers in South Texas and Mexico. They plan to hire 12 people initially and possibly grow to 50 employees over the next five years. They offer good pay and full benefits to their employees. This will be a 150,000 square foot facility with a capital investment of over $10 million.

On another story, the board of director’s and staff of the McAllen Heritage Center – a Museum of history and culture are proud to invite the community to the first opening reception of The Artist’s Corner at MHC on Saturday, October 25, 2014 featuring the work of McAllen artist, Brittany Stewart.  The evening begins at 6 p.m. with a presentation by the artist followed by a wine and cheese reception.
