The City of Edinburg, the Mexican Consulate’s Office in McAllen and the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library invite the community to the City’s first DanzonFest scheduled for Nov. 8, at the Edinburg City Hall Courtyard.

Danzón is a musical genre that originated in Cuba but also flourished in Mexico, especially in the State of Veracruz where they have the popular Tardes de Danzón. Danzón is a rhythmic dance showcasing a mixture of traditional European dance moves with the infusion of the cadence of the Afro Caribbean rhythm.

The event will feature the orchestra, Manteca Brass and various regional Danzón dance groups from Mexico. Cristina Kahlo, grandniece of Frida Kahlo will be present to share her photography exhibition Tiempo de Danzón.

The festivities will begin at 1 p.m. with a Danzón workshop, allowing those interested in learning the dance moves to prepare for the evening dance. At 2:30 p.m. Cristina Kahlo will hold a question and answer session on the topic of photography, this should be of great interest as both her father and grandfather, Guillermo Kahlo are renown photographers. At 3:30 p.m. there will be a series of performances by various Danzón groups from Monterrey, Matamoros and Reynosa. At 5 p.m. Cristina Kahlo will speak on her photography exhibit titled Tiempo de Danzón.

The Jarochos Del Valle will play from 6 – 7 p.m. as the Edinburg Parks & Recreation Dance Team will delight with their Veracruz Folkloric Dances. From 7-10 p.m. you can dance the night away.
