EDINBURG, Texas â€“ Rio Grande Valley Sector (RGV) Border Patrol agents work alongside local law enforcement agencies to disrupt life threatening human smuggling attempts.

Saturday morning, Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) requested assistance from the McAllen Border Patrol Station agents at a residence suspected of being used to harbor migrants. Responding deputies reported seeing approximately 40 to 60 subjects inside the Mission, Texas residence. The subjects began to abscond from the residence through windows and into the nearby neighborhood. Border Patrol agents arrived at the location and began a search of the area. A total of fourteen migrants were taken into custody.

Saturday afternoon, a dark grey Chevrolet Malibu traveling northbound on US-281, failed to yield to Border Patrol marked units. Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) continued to pursue the vehicle. The vehicle attempted to utilize the turnaround under the US-281 overpass and subsequently struck the curb causing its airbags to deploy, immobilizing the vehicle. Agents observed approximately seven subjects exit the vehicle and run into a nearby open field. Agents apprehended four of the subjects including the driver, a United States citizen. Texas DPS took custody of the driver.

Yesterday evening, Penitas Police Department relayed information to McAllen Border Patrol Station agents regarding a grey GMC Yukon that failed to yield to them near Ebony Street and Palm Street. A Border Patrol unit assigned to the levee near Schuerbach Road, observed the vehicle attempt to head south but found that the gate was closed. Still attempting to flee, the GMC Yukon struck the unit on the levee and continued east where it ultimately came to a stop. Border Patrol agents responded to the area and observed one subject jump into the Rio Grande in an attempt to flee to Mexico. Halfway across the river, the subject began to struggle to stay above water. Responding Border Patrol riverine units rescued the subjects and returned him to shore where Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) provided medical assistance. Six migrants from the countries of Mexico, El Salvador, and Honduras, illegally present in the United States were taken into Border Patrol custody.

Border Patrol processed all subjects accordingly.

Even with the spread of the COVID-19 virus, human smugglers continue to try these brazen attempts with zero regard for the lives they endanger nor to the health of the citizens of our great nation.  The U.S. Border Patrol agents of the Rio Grande Valley Sector will continue to safeguard the nation and community against these criminal elements.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation’s borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
