EDINBURG – Commissioners Court voted in favor of naming the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office Substation in Precinct 1 Weslaco after fallen deputy Benito E. Bravo.

The Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with Precinct 1 Commissioner David L. Fuentes, is preserving the memory of Bravo who was killed in the line of duty in a car accident near the location of the new substation.

Bravo was first hired at the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office on July 2, 1984, and worked his way up the ranks to patrol deputy in January 1987.  He graduated from the Sheriff’s Office Academy in August 1986.

“Deputy Bravo will forever be remembered for sacrificing his life to protect our community,” said Hidalgo County Sheriff J.E. “Eddie” Guerra.

Family members of fallen Deputy Bravo were present to accept the resolution.

Erasmo Bravo, one of Benito’s two brothers, spoke on behalf of the family.

“The substation is a couple of miles away from where my brother died,” said Bravo, adding that he and his family will be there when it opens.

His end of watch was on July 21, 1987, at 12:10 a.m.
