EDINBURG – State, county and local agencies met Monday morning to pool resources to aid residents in Fayesville and north Edinburg who experienced flooding caused by the recent torrential rain.

Hidalgo County Emergency Management Coordinator Ricardo Saldaña, who coordinated the meeting after conferring with the Texas Department of Emergency Management, said crews have been in the area pumping water, but it isn’t enough.

“The problem is that the rain hasn’t subsided long enough to allow the water to recede,” said Saldaña. “All our efforts haven’t been enough so we have to take additional measures.”

Representatives from the Hidalgo County Office of Emergency Management; Hidalgo County Judge’s Office; Drainage District No. 1; Hidalgo County Precinct 4; the Texas Department of Emergency Management; Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Department of Transportation; City of Edinburg; and City of Edinburg Fire Department devised a plan on how to remove the standing water in the affected areas.

“Our main focus is to alleviate the water issue in those areas,” said Saldaña. “All we ask of our residents is to be patient; help is on the way.”

Drainage District No. 1 staff, with help from the City of Edinburg, will construct a new ditch behind E.B. Guerra Elementary School. Edinburg will also provide pumps to continue removing standing water. The new ditch will help drain water near Becky Lane, Tamarron Estates and Hwy 281.

Another area severely affected is Rio Grande Road and North FM 1925 in North Edinburg.  County officials are working to obtain permission to enter private property there. Once access is granted, state, local and county agencies will begin pumping efforts to relieve flood waters in that area.
