Laredo, Texas – During today’s Special City Council Meeting, the City of Laredo Mayor, Pete Saenz, and Members of Council recognized Laredo Police Officer Carlos I. Velasquez. Officer Velasquez was awarded the 2021 Honorable Mention TOP COP Award from the National Association of Police Organizations.
In April 2020, Officer Velasquez managed a high-risk situation in which a hostage could havelost their life. With bravery and quick decision making, Velasquez removed the threat and saved a woman’s life. It is because of his courageous actions that Velasquez is being recognized.
The TOP COPS Awards are awarded to law enforcement officers from across the United States for heroism and bravery in the face of imminent threats to themselves and others. There are hundreds of nominations for this award every year, but only one TOP COP case is chosen from each of the 50 States and U.S. territories. The purpose of the TOP COPS Awards is to educate the American public about our nation’s heroes and to pay tribute to law enforcement officers in federal, state, county, tribal, and local agencies from across the country for actions above and beyond the call of duty during the preceding year.
The City of Laredo and its elected officials commend and are proud of Officer Velasquez’ achievements.
