WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) released the following statement after Senate Democrats walked away from negotiations to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act and Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) announced her intent to introduce legislation to extend the law:

“I’m grateful to Senator Ernst for her leadership and to the rest of my colleagues who have negotiated in good faith with our Democratic colleagues to extend this critical law.”

“Unfortunately, the other side of the aisle once again couldn’t resist the temptation to play politics. While our side tried in earnest to resolve our differences, it’s clear that Democrats would rather use this to attack our members as they have in the past.”

“Despite this, I remain optimistic we can come to an agreement in the future, and I’d invite our Democratic friends to put politics aside and come back to the negotiating table as soon as possible.”

Senator John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, is a member of the Senate Finance, Intelligence, and Judiciary Committees.
