Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz (TX-15) re-introduced the HUD Transparency Act this week. This bill mandates the Inspector General (IG) at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) testify annually before Congress.

The legislation specifies the IG must testify about: efforts to detect and prevent fraud, waste, and abuse; the ability to conduct and supervise audits, investigations, and reviews; actions to identify opportunities for HUD programs to progress and succeed; and recommendations to improve overall efficiency and public accountability.

“HUD’s budget exceeds $70 billion,” De La Cruz noted. “Until 2023, it had been five years without testimony from the IG’s office. That must change to ensure accountability for these taxpayer dollars meant to help those who need it most. The HUD Transparency Act ensures Congress has a consistent oversight mechanism for HUD.”

Congresswoman De La Cruz previously introduced this legislation during the 118th Congress and it passed in the House in July 2024. This legislation is expected to again pass the House and have a smooth path to approval in the Senate and eventually signed into law.
