Brownsville, Texas – Today, Congressman Filemon Vela (D-TX) announced that the City of Brownsville was awarded an additional $2,656,421 in entitlement funds from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) through the Airport Improvement Program (AIP).
The federal funds will be used to complete the final stage of the Brownsville South Padre International Airport renovations by reconstructing 20,700 square yards of the existing terminal apron pavement. These funds are part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) of 2020.
“I was happy to assist the City of Brownsville in securing federal funds from the FAA,” said Congressman Filemon Vela. “The City of Brownsville has worked tirelessly to ensure the completion of the improved Brownsville South Padre Island Airport. I am glad to hear that final steps will soon be completed and those traveling to and from South Texas will be able to experience this new and enhanced terminal.”
“We are extremely grateful for the continued support from the FAA and Congressman Vela’s Office,” said Brownsville Mayor Trey Mendez. “Since the beginning, Congressman Vela has been unwavering in his advocacy for this project and what it means to the future of our great city. This funding will allow for the completion of our state of the art terminal project, and we look forward to opening the terminal later this year.”
