Washington, DC – On Monday, Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-TX-28) met with Pleasanton High School student Leslie Hartman, winner of the 2019 Congressional Art Competition for Texas’ 28th District.

“This year, we had many great entries from throughout the district. The Congressional Art Competition provides young artists in our country the opportunity to display their unique pieces in the halls of the U.S. Capitol. This year, I chose Leslie Hartman’s painting to represent our district due to her colorful and elaborate artwork. I congratulate her, as well as her parents and educators in Pleasanton High School.”

The Congressional Art Competition gives the nation’s young artists the opportunity to compete for the chance to have their work displayed in the United States Capitol Building. Each member of Congress has the opportunity to host a local competition amongst high school students in his/her district and select the winning entry.

This year, a total of 77 art pieces were submitted from across the 28th District of Texas. As the winner of the art competition, Leslie was invited to fly to Washington, D.C., courtesy of Southwest Airlines, where she attended a reception and ribbon-cutting ceremony with her family and Congressman Cuellar on Monday, June 24, where her artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol. She also had the opportunity to meet students from other parts of the country, spend time with Congressman Cuellar, and tour the nation’s capital.

Leslie Hartman said “I chose the subject of a young child to portray the creativity and opportunity in all of us.  I am so thankful for this high honor and representation through our district’s congressional office. My passion drives me to continue my art throughout my life, and encourage others to express theirs.”
