WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) published an editorial urging Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to accept the United States’ offer of help to secure the country. On Tuesday, November 5, a massacre of nine people, women and children, in the Mexican state of Chihuahua highlighted the increasing stranglehold of Mexican cartels in parts of the country and the nation’s inability to combat them.
Congressman Gonzalez outlines the need for the Mexican government to accept U.S. assistance and throws the gauntlet at the Mexican political establishment to summon the political will to create a collaborative national security strategy. He addresses that it is only a matter of time before the violence in the Mexico has a direct effect on the United States.
“Where do you draw the line? What does the ‘red line’ look like before our offer is respectfully accepted?” asks Congressman Gonzalez. “Or will the line be drawn only when our own citizens and national security interests are directly threatened?”

Mexico: The time is now or never

Although I rarely find myself agreeing with President Donald Trump, on this occasion our views somewhat align. Mexico needs our help to improve citizen security, and it’s time we take bold, concrete steps to do it. We have a moral obligation to make the offer just as Mexico has a moral obligation to accept it in the interest of protecting its citizens. In the last few weeks we have witnessed massacres in the states of Michoacán, Sinaloa, and most recently the murders of dual Mexican-American citizens in Chihuahua which included innocent women and young children. The time for empty promises is over.
My question is: where do you draw the line? What does the “red line” look like before our offer is respectfully accepted? Or will the line be drawn only when our own citizens and national security interests are directly threatened?
I say this with absolute and total respect, love and admiration for our friends, neighbors and business partners to the south: if not now, when?
I clearly understand Mexico’s reaction and assertion of sovereignty. History and international law give them this right and their memory is without a doubt long. For a long time, many Mexicans viewed both the PAN (Partido Acción Nacional) and PRI (Partido Revolucionario Institucional) parties as “sell outs” to the United States.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is different in this respect and quite the opposite.
He is one of the most popular Mexican presidents in recent history. He is not afraid to tell Mexico and international business elites “no!” to defend public interest. As president, he is still polling favorably and his party holds the majority in both chambers of Congress.
For the first time in decades, he is the only president to have the kind of domestic political support necessary to proudly accept our help and take the steps necessary to rid Mexico of the violence once and for all. The moment for President Lopez Obrador to cement his place in history and fulfill his legacy as a man of the people is now.
I do not condone war, but there must be action. Together, with Mexican government support combined with increased American involvement, we can develop and accomplish real national security strategies and goals to secure Mexico and bring about peace-of-mind for those in the United States. The Mexican people deserve this, and it is the duty President Lopez Obrador to provide them with the basic security to live peacefully and prosperously.

Aunque hay pocas veces que estoy de acuerdo con el presidente Donald Trump, en relación con el tema de seguridad en México, en esta ocasión tengo que ser honesto y hasta cierto punto estoy de acuerdo con él. México necesita nuestra ayuda para fortalecer su seguridad pública y es hora de tomar acciones concretas y audaces. Tenemos la obligación moral de ofrecer ayuda a nuestros hermanos, socios y vecinos, y México tiene la obligación moral de considerarla, con el fin de proteger a sus ciudadanos. En cuestión de semanas hemos visto masacres en los estados de Michoacán, Sinaloa, y la más reciente el asesinato de ciudadanos con doble nacionalidad México – estadounidenses, entre ellos niños y mujeres, en el estado de Chihuahua. El tiempo para promesas vacías ha terminado.
Mi pregunta es: ¿Dónde está la “línea roja”? ¿Qué tiene que ocurrir para que México respetuosamente acepte nuestra oferta y ayuda? ¿Acaso cuándo nos veamos obligados a tomar acción para proteger a nuestros ciudadanos y seguridad nacional?
Con todo el respeto y cariño a nuestros amigos, vecinos y socios al sur de la frontera. ¿Si no es ahora cuándo?
Entiendo claramente la reacción de México y su aserción a su soberanía. La historia y la ley International está de su lado, y sin duda alguna su memoria histórica es larga. Por el bien o mal, muchos mexicanos han visto a los partidos PAN y PRI como “unos vendidos” a los Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, México ahora tiene al presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador, quien al respecto es diferente, e incluso es lo opuesto.
El presidente López Obrador, es uno de los presidentes más populares en la reciente historia de México. Él es visto como un presidente quien sin temor les dice a las compañías internacionales y a los elites mexicanos, ¡No! con fin de proteger los intereses públicos. Como presidente, se mantiene arriba en las encuestas y su partido controla las dos cámaras del congreso.
Él es el único presidente, en las últimas décadas, quien tiene el apoyo político necesario para orgullosamente aceptar nuestra ayuda, y tomar las decisiones necesarias para poder liberar a México de la violencia, de una vez por todas. El presidente López Obrador está en el lugar y en el momento correcto en la historia para cumplir su legado como un líder del pueblo.
La respuesta no es guerra, pero hay la responsabilidad de acción, el gobierno mexicano con apoyo del gobierno estadounidense puede cumplir y crear estrategias realistas de seguridad nacional y crear metas para ayudar a México ser un país más seguro. La población se lo merece. El presidente tiene la obligación de proporcionar a sus ciudadanos con la seguridad que se merecen.
