WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) sent a letter to Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra urging the Department to optimize and maximize their outreach to educate and encourage rural and underserved Americans to get vaccinated.

This comes as President Biden has declared June as “COVID-19 Vaccine Month of Action” in order to accomplish the goal of vaccinating 70% of eligible Americans by July 4.

Congressman Gonzalez writes in the letter: “Local newspapers and community media can help us reach this goal and combat misinformation in South Texas and across the country. During the 2020 Census, the Census Bureau maximized its outreach to minority ethnic groups and non-English speakers by utilizing local and non-traditional media in multiple languages. The Department of Health and Human Services should adopt a similar approach.”

The Congressman stressed the importance of building confidence in the vaccine as well as reaching those who have not been vaccinated yet: “Local newspapers, radio and television stations are equipped to communicate this important information to those concerned or facing barriers to access the vaccine.”
