WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) is inviting all eligible high school students in the 15th District of Texas to apply for a nomination to attend the United States service academies beginning in Fall 2019.

These institutions prepare college-age Americans to be officers in the U.S. uniformed services. Upon graduation, service academy graduates join active or reserve status as officers for a minimum of five years. Current law authorizes Congressman Gonzalez to nominate candidates for appointment to four of five U.S. service academies:

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy does not require a congressional nomination for appointment, as this academy accepts candidates based on their own testing criteria.

“It is my honor to nominate exceptional young men and women from the 15th District of Texas to our nation’s military academies,” Congressman Gonzalez said. “These academies offer students a top-notch education and train them to become the next generation of military leaders. I encourage all interested students to apply for a nomination and serve their country.”

Although many of the qualifications are similar, each military service academy operates under its own admissions guidelines. Nominations are based on a “whole person” evaluation. The academies consider several factors including: academic achievements, extra-curricular activities, leadership skills, physical aptitude, character, and motivation are taken into consideration. The application period ends on November 9, 2018.
