WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) thanks House appropriators for including an extension for the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) in the stopgap spending bill.

“It is important for victims of domestic violence to know that Congress has their back,” Congressman Gonzalez said. “I look forward to working with my colleagues, on both sides of the aisle, to ensure that women across the country, including those that live in rural communities, have access to safe and affordable housing, financial services, and counseling.”

Earlier this year, Congressmen Gonzalez and Bruce Poliquin (ME-02) introduced H.R. 5654, the VAWA Protections for Rural Women Act of 2018, that added the Rural Housing Voucher program to the list of covered housing programs under VAWA. This was a crucial step toward protecting victims of domestic violence who need help securing housing.

VAWA, which was set to expire on September 30, 2018, will be extended until December 7, 2018, once the spending bill is enacted. The Senate cleared the measure on Tuesday. The House is expected to vote on the measure next week.
