WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) announced the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was awarded $475,000 through the U.S. Department of Education for the High School Equivalency Program. This program is designed to help 100 migrant and seasonal farmworkers receive a secondary school diploma.
The High School Equivalency Program also helps migrant students find placement in an institution of higher education or other postsecondary education or training.

“The success of our students who are engaged, or whose parents are engaged, in migrant and other seasonal farm work is very important to us, and this grant allows our university to continue that critical mission,” said UTRGV President Guy Bailey. “I thank Congressman Gonzalez and everyone at UTRGV who assisted in obtaining this grant.”
UTRGV’s Edinburg campus will house the project and recruit students from Hidalgo, Starr, Cameron and Willacy Counties. Students will receive weekly instruction on subjects that include life skills, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
