RIO GRANDE CITY – In a significant step towards enhancing water security and drought resilience in Starr County, U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28) announced today the allocation of $9,436,120 in federal funding to the Union Water Supply Corporation (UWSC). The funding, provided through the Bureau of Land Reclamation’s WaterSMART Drought Response Program, aims to support critical water infrastructure improvements.
The grant will enable UWSC to develop a second water source, a new well, which will supplement the current sole water source, the Rio Grande River. This diversification is expected to significantly bolster the community’s defenses against drought conditions, ensuring a more reliable water supply for residents and businesses.
“I am pleased to announce federal dollars for the Union Water Supply Corporation, which will allow UWSC to add a second water source. This new well helps defend against ongoing droughts. It also grows our community and creates new jobs,” said Dr. Cuellar, a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee. “I want to thank local leaders here in Starr County and UWSC Board members for working with me to make this project possible. In Congress, I will continue to fight to ensure Starr County residents have the resources they need to thrive.”
The funding will address the pressing need for water security in Starr County, where the community relies on the Rio Grande River as its only water source. Introducing a new well is expected to alleviate the adverse effects of the ongoing drought, providing a stable and dependable water supply.
This project promises to enhance the quality of life for Starr County residents by ensuring water availability. It also presents opportunities for local economic growth through job creation associated with the construction and maintenance of the new water infrastructure.
Local leaders and UWSC Board members have expressed their gratitude for the federal support, highlighting the collaborative effort required to secure this funding. The project represents a critical investment in the region’s infrastructure, contributing to long-term sustainability and resilience.
As drought conditions continue to challenge many communities across the country, the initiative in Starr County stands as an example of proactive measures to address water scarcity and support community development. Congressman Cuellar’s commitment to advocating for resources at the federal level underscores the importance of ensuring that local communities are equipped to face environmental challenges.
With the secured funding, UWSC is set to develop the new well, marking a significant milestone in the journey towards enhanced water security and resilience for Starr County.
