EDINBURG – Vietnam Veteran Cruz Yanez was recognized in Commissioners Court for his exceptional bravery while serving in the U.S. Army.

Hidalgo County Veterans Service Officer Felix M. Rodriguez introduced Yanez as an American hero and requested support from the court in the effort of Sgt. Yanez receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Yanez was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with V Device, the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

“I am highly honored to be in the presence of a real American hero,” said Rodriguez.   “This man courageously served our country and saved lives.”

According to Rodriguez, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez has offered to assist in obtaining a Congressional Medal of Honor for Sgt. Yanez.

Vietnam Veteran and Purple Heart recipient Tony Cordova read through a record of all of Sgt. Yanez’s accomplishments in the military.

His many heroic actions included, protecting a wounded comrade under heavy fire while reinforcements arrived and, in true gallantry fashion, he also completely disregarded his own safety by opening fire on enemy forces to save his fellow soldiers.

“Through all of these escapades and actions, he never got wounded,” said Cordova.

Commissioners Court congratulated Yanez for all of his achievements and supports the efforts of Congressman Gonzalez.
