Precinct 2 Commissioner Eddie Cantu highlighted trails, parks, youth programs, and infrastructure projects during the 2025 Hidalgo County State of the County Address, describing his precinct as “stronger than ever” and focused on building a healthier, more inclusive community.

“At Precinct 2, our mission is to create a stronger, healthier, and more inclusive community for all residents,” Cantu said. He pointed to the opening of the county’s first multi-city hike-and-bike trail in San Juan Park, which includes underpasses beneath busy roads for safety. An additional 15 miles of trails are under construction, connecting McAllen and Mission. “Precinct 2 is leading the way in healthy living,” he said.

Cantu also celebrated the creation of the county’s first multimillion-dollar inclusive park, designed to serve children of all abilities. A second inclusive park is planned for North Precinct 2. “Everyone deserves a place to play,” he said, noting features such as accessible playgrounds, soccer fields, and family-friendly amenities.

Youth programs are another cornerstone of Precinct 2’s strategy. Cantu described partnerships with Boys and Girls Clubs in Pharr, San Juan, and Alamo, which provide more than 1,000 children daily with safe spaces for homework, meals, and enrichment activities. He also highlighted scholarship programs for high school seniors and special-needs fitness initiatives, such as the Strong Fit Athletics Program, which helps children achieve milestones that “inspire entire families.”

The commissioner said education and creativity are priorities. Precinct 2 has expanded fine arts, sewing, and ESL programs, providing opportunities for children, adults, and seniors to learn new skills.

Healthcare access is also growing. Cantu reported expanded support for local clinics, including the Hope Clinic in Alamo, and county health centers that provide affordable medical services and vaccines. Seniors benefit from Community Resource Centers, which host food bank distributions, wellness programs, and seasonal assistance such as heaters and blankets.

On infrastructure, Cantu said road projects like Sue Eldora, Cesar Chavez, Moore, and Dicker Roads are making commutes safer and more efficient. He reported nearly $500 million invested in drainage improvements, reducing flooding risks while keeping tax increases among the lowest in the region.

“We’re just getting started,” Cantu said. “Thank you for your trust and support. As we continue building a better future for all, together, we are making a difference.”
